It is one of the most dreaded diagnoses a person can get aside from perhaps cancer. For many people diabetes can spell the end to life, as they know it, truck drivers for example have an extremely hard time staying on the road with diabetes.
Not all is lost however; managing type two diabetes is not impossible with the right instructions.
Understand the Disease
The first step to managing anything is to understand it and diabetes is no exception.
Before you can know what to do you must know what you are dealing with. Then and only then can you move forward successfully.
Diabetes is one of the most common ailments in society today and type two is the most common type. Millions of Americans are diagnosed with the disease every year.
To put it simply diabetes is a problem with insulin and sugar. Either the body is not manufacturing enough of it or the cells are not cooperating with it.
The latter is what is known as insulin resistance. Sugar is the fuel for your cells and insulin is the way that fuel is introduced, if you have too little insulin or the cells will not receive it then they cannot get the fuel they need.
This leads to a sugar build up in the blood stream leading to organ damage.
Managing
Managing type two diabetes is a matter of diet, exercise and perhaps medication. Being overweight and inactive leaves you at a higher risk for developing the disease, conversely losing weight and becoming active can actually reverse it once you have it.
Type two diabetes is normally a problem with the insulin resistant cells. This means the body is making enough insulin but the cells are not receiving it. To change this you will need to begin with a healthy diet.
Diet
The best diet plan you can follow will be one that is full of fresh fruits, vegetables and fiber.
You should limit your intake of carbohydrates and starches as these become glucose in the system very rapidly.
Eat several small meals per day and at the same time. Getting on a routine will help curb the inclination to overeat in one setting.
Keep your meals simple and low in calories by adding whole grain bread, skinless chicken and plenty of vegetables. Some other tips include:
• Drink a glass of water before every meal
• Wait 20 minutes after eating before getting seconds
• Cut your takeout food in half, put the rest up for later then follow the two tips above.
• Replace at least one high carb item with a low one each week to wean yourself of bad eating habits
Exercise
One of the most effective tools for managing type two diabetes is exercise.
You will do two things with a regular exercise routine; increase your metabolism in order to burn more calories and lose weight.
Both of these are very helpful in managing your diabetes.
Take a walk every day after dinner to increase your metabolism and burn extra calories. Any activity that raises your heart rate even a little is a good start.
As the weight begins to come off consider joining an aerobics or other exercise class.
Medication
Each person's case is different and only your personal doctor should advise you on which medications to take.
Do not suddenly stop or start a medication without consulting your physician.
